I'll be honest — I often feel like my time's under attack.
Chances are you feel the same way.
Every day brings a flood of emails, podcast guest pitches, DMs, invitations, and last-minute “asks.”
It’s easy to feel like we have to say yes to everything. But here’s the truth:
We don’t.
And in fact, saying no might be the most powerful productivity tool we aren't using often enough.
The Power of Protecting Your Time 🛡
Saying yes to every request might feel like the polite thing to do—but it comes at a cost.
That cost? Our energy. Our focus. Our ability to actually get the important things done.
When we start setting clear boundaries, we create space to focus on what really matters.
- Deep work.
- Strategic thinking.
- Even just breathing room.
It’s not about being unavailable—it’s about being intentional.
Saying no isn’t rejection.
It signals commitment to our goals.
As Seth Godin told me in one of our conversations on the YouTube channel saying no is a choice. Leadership is about choosing to say "no".
Saying No Doesn’t Have to Be Harsh 🙅♂️
Let’s be real—saying no can feel uncomfortable.
But with a little intention and the right language, it can actually feel respectful and even empowering. Here are a few ways to do it gracefully:
→ The Kind Decline:
"I really appreciate you thinking of me, but I’m currently focused on other priorities and won’t be able to commit."
→ The Helpful Redirect:
"This isn’t a fit for me right now, but you might want to connect with [Name] who could be a great resource."
→ The Honest Delay:
"Can I circle back to this next week? I want to make sure I have the bandwidth to give it proper attention."
Each of these respects the person—and protects your time.
When We Say No, We're Saying Yes to What Matters
Every no creates space for a bigger yes.
Yes to deeper focus. Yes to personal growth. Yes to our actual priorities.
And when people see that you value our time, they start valuing it, too.
Think about it: the most respected people we know probably aren’t the ones who say yes to everything.
They’re the ones who say yes to the right things.
Ask Yourself: Where Do I Need to Say No?
Take a moment and look at your calendar, your inbox, your to-do list.
What’s on there that doesn’t actually deserve your time?
This isn’t about being rigid—it’s about being clear.
Clear on what moves the needle. Clear on what drains you. Clear on what you’re building and where you’re headed.
Because when you get clear, saying no becomes a whole lot easier.
And your productivity? It skyrockets.
Here’s to creating space for what truly matters.
Ciao for now,
Ash
