Over 80% of entrepreneurs feel like imposters at some point in their careers.
That nagging feeling that you're going to get 'found out' soon and people will realise you're a fraud.
Oscar winning actors have felt this.
In fact, there's a correlation between high-achievement psychological profiles and imposter syndrome.
So don't worry. You're not alone.
Fortunately, there are practical ways to overcome it and unlock your true potential!
My friend, Chris Do — an Emmy Award-winning designer, explains, imposter syndrome often disguises itself as humility. We’ve been taught to downplay our abilities, to “stay humble.”
But when humility becomes a mask for self-doubt, it prevents us from stepping into our full potential.
The Problem with Humility
Many of us think humility means underestimating our skills. (That's not humility IMO)
We downplay our abilities, avoid asking for the money we deserve, or hold back from seizing opportunities.
And here's the kicker: this self-doubt not only limits our growth, it affects how others perceive us. Your body language, tone of voice, and even your willingness to ask for what you're worth start to reflect your own low self-assessment.
If you continually tell yourself that you're "not good enough," you'll start believing it—and so will others.
Shifting Your Mindset
Chris Do suggests a bold mindset shift: err on the side of confidence. When you’re unsure whether to overestimate or underestimate your abilities, lean toward confidence.
Imagine you're that athlete who walks onto the Olympic stage already believing they’ve won.
Sure, you may not always hit the mark, but the energy you bring can make all the difference.
Confidence, even when it feels like a stretch, primes you for success.
Three Practical Steps to Overcome Imposter Syndrome
- Acknowledge Your Wins: List your achievements and review them before key moments to boost confidence.
- Reframe Self-Doubt: Challenge negative thoughts by asking, "What if I'm better than I think?"
- Take Action: Act even if you're uncertain. Confidence builds through doing, not hesitating
The Cost of Playing Small
Underestimating yourself can cost you opportunities that align with your strengths and ambitions.
Imagine missing out on a dream job or client because you didn’t feel “ready” or “good enough.”
Confidence doesn’t appear overnight, but it is something you can build through consistent, small actions.
It’s about recognizing that you’re capable, deserving, and ready—right now.
